PUBLIC WORKS REDESIGN

Service Design in Government

I was hired by The City of Oakland to be a part of a team that undertook a comprehensive redesign and migration of their website to a new platform. I surveyed the old, Oracle based website, interviewed city staff, met with stakeholders, and mapped out key tasks and user journeys to improve the experience for both public users and city employees.

As a pilot, I began with The Department of Public Works because their team was really excited about modernizing. I worked closely with them for months to build a site map and IA before getting to work prototyping new site designs and rewriting content.

The end result was a full compliant website that reduced bounce rate by 70% and drastically reduced staff time for key tasks.

This redesign was implemented across the entire City of Oakland in 2018 to fulfill The City's stated goal of creating a modern, service-focused website.
